What if the real danger of AI is not that machines become smarter than us?
What if it is that we become less capable of thinking for ourselves?
THE DECISION CODE reached number one among new Kindle releases in cognitive psychology. I will take the compliment, briefly. Rankings move, and this one will too.
The more useful signal is what it says about the question itself. A book about the neuroscience of decisions did not reach the top of that category because of me. It reached it because a great many people are quietly uneasy about what artificial intelligence is doing to their own thinking, and have not had the language for it.
So let me put the uneasiness into words.
Artificial intelligence can now analyze, predict, write, recommend and decide for you. Remarkable. But here is what nobody tells you.
Your brain is constantly rewiring itself based on what you practice. That is neuroplasticity, and it works in both directions. Every time you outsource your hardest thinking, you may be practicing something you never intended. The art of not thinking.
Artificial intelligence does not automatically fix bad thinking. It can scale it.
A biased leader can become more biased. An overconfident leader can become more dangerous. And a leader who stops questioning can become a rubber stamp for a machine.
I have spent thirty years studying how the human brain makes decisions, and here is what I have learned. Your brain is not naturally rational. It is a prediction machine, driven by unconscious biases, emotions and deeply ingrained habits. Now connect that brain to a system capable of amplifying its thinking at extraordinary speed, and ask yourself what happens.
But there is extraordinary good news. Your brain can learn to do something artificial intelligence cannot do for you: observe your own thinking while you are thinking.
I call this meta-consciousness.

It is the ability to:
- Catch a bias before it becomes a decision.
- Recognize fear before it becomes a strategy.
- Question an assumption before AI amplifies it.
Most importantly, it is a capacity you can train.
That is why I wrote THE DECISION CODE. To help you understand the hidden neuroscience of your decisions, and build the awareness and adaptability to make better ones. Because in the age of artificial intelligence, your greatest competitive advantage may be your own consciousness.
Watch, the whole argument
For your team
A masterclass on deciding well in the age of AI
Individuals can read a book. Teams decide together, which means their biases compound rather than cancel. When a group adopts artificial intelligence without training the thinking underneath it, the machine does not make the group wiser. It makes the group faster at whatever it already believed.
I deliver this as a live masterclass for leadership teams. We work on your real decisions, not case studies. Your people leave able to recognize collapse in the room while it is happening, to interrogate an answer from a machine rather than ratify it, and to tell the difference between confidence and evidence.
Delivered online, for a single team or an entire leadership group. Tell me what you are facing and I will tell you honestly whether this is the right intervention.
